Capizzo is proud to present the Chicago Blues Photography of acclaimed photojournalist, Marc PoKempner. Marc PoKempner's photography masterfully documents the South Side Chicago blues scene of the 1970s and 1980s. This exhibition captures the raw energy of legendary Chicago Blues greats Junior Wells, Buddy Guy, Muddy Waters, Hound Dog Taylor, Howlin' Wolf, Kid Dynamite and others, alongside the people dancing and enjoying the music and atmosphere.
PoKempner’s photos are held in the permanent collections of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery.
On display at Capizzo, among the many stunning photos, you will find “Buddy Guy Calls the Youngblood’s Bluff, Checkerboard Lounge, Chicago 1982” from the Art Institute collection alongside his photographs of Barack Obama, which are in the National Portrait Gallery and the Obama Presidential Center.

Pistol Pete

While Marc PoKempner was photographing the blues on the South Side, Benjamin Newell - better known as "Pistol Pete" - was tearing it up on the West Side, playing at the vibrant blues bars that once lined Roosevelt Road.
Pete grew up surrounded by music; his father always had musicians over at the house, and Hound Dog Taylor was a frequent visitor. He visited Maxwell Street with his parents every sun and landed his first gig at just 12 years old, playing at Club 1815. For the next eight years, Pistol Pete immersed himself in the local club scene, playing nightly and learning directly from Chicago's greatest blues legends.

The human figure becomes a vessel for memory—carrying traces of history, emotion, and the shared experiences that connect us across generations."
